It talks about talking to learn across cultures and communities in which focus on ‘discussion’. The goals of this session are to explore how discussion might be used to promote language learning, perspective talking, and critical thinking; to think about five principles for promoting discussion; to examine three discussion formats that might be used in classrooms. The five principles for discussion are to engage participants in focused discussions based on their lived experiences; to create multiple opportunities for participants to prepare; to keep the focus on the students; value meaning-making and active listening; to honour differences, reflect on content and interaction, offer closure. These will challenge the student readiness, distribution of talk, spontaneity vs thoughtfulness, reluctance, traditional teacher/student relationship. This session also suggest how discussion is supposed to be, like creating a discussion in horizontal conversation instead of vertical. Speaking of discussion as a ‘talking to learn’ media, this way is more effective because discussion not only as a media to represent what students already know, but also (even more) to engineer new ways of student’s thinking.

We are unable to post the comments over there anymore. I'm Rindi Mustika and my email address is rindihehohe@gmail.com. The webinar section 16.5 is interesting as always. The topic is about the new forum in teaching English. The purposes of new forum are to give the new contents of forum and to improve professional development In this section also shows the fun teaching techniques to be used as a professional development for learners. I think the second idea about speed drawing to vocabulary retention is genius because it can be used to gain learners’ vocabulary whether the simple one even for the complex one, as well as to express students’ ideas.

  4. I am Rindi Mustika and my email address is rindihehohe@gmail.com. My comment about the webinar 16.6 is very thoughtful and useful. It talks about talking to learn across classrooms and communities. The information is helpful for those who are teachers or wants to be a teacher someday. Because through this section, we learn about how to do discussion between teacher and students. Not only we merely discuss some topic inside the classroom but, the teacher should observe the situation whether or not the students are ready to the discussion about certain topic. From this section, we also able to know that discussion is not always a debate kind of conversation, but it can turns into something more like tournaments between the teacher and students to determine the winner and the loser. In this section, there are the ways in engaging students becoming thoughtful during the discussion. One of the way the teacher should do is luring the students into discussion based on their experiences. I addition, we are also informed that when we are discussing, we should give many chances for students to be ready in their next turn. Overall, this section is really helpful and no doubt will be needing lot of patience to be practiced. Thank you for all the six sections! They are all very informative and full of amusing topics!

Generally, this last session of Webinar talks about the principles to guide the teacher for engaging students in thoughtful, participatory classroom discussions. Based on those principles, the teacher will hopefully be able to guide the students in creating a good discussion in the class. In addition, there are also three formats for classroom dialogue that can be applied. Each of the format is generative and flexible in terms of age and language readiness. Therefore, I learn about how to create a good classroom discussion from this last Webinar as well as the clear guidance to do it.

There are some principles “in talking to learn” : align dialogue with student goals and expectations, engaging students in lived experiences, honor difference, reflect, and offer closure, focus on meaning and value active listening, keep the conversation horizontal, and offer multiple opportunities for students to prepare. This topic is good to be followed. It is very valuable for people who live in education world to know the role of participatoy and exploratory civil dialogue for its pedagogical benefits. We can learn many things from this webinar, because discussion does not always come easily, especially in language classroom. We can take the useful information through this webinar.

From the video, we can conclude that the skill in talking or discussing is quite important matter because it is the main "power" for teachers. Although the curriculum nowadays demands that teachers should not only talk in front of class but rather involving students in the study process, students still needs teachers' explanation in order to understanding the materials. That is way, this video helps them to enhance their communication skill. Meanwhile, this skill is also important for others, not only teachers, because when we are talking in communities we have to make sure that the way we talk does not make misunderstanding. Overall, this video is helpful for whoever who wants to improve their communication skill.

This last webinar is a worldwide issue I think, because it talks about teaching across culture, it will be a very complex issue when we talk about different cultures and education. Through this section, we learn about how to do discussion between teacher and students. I think it is a good guidance for teachers when they are teaching students from different culture with her/him. There are the ways in engaging students becoming thoughtful during the discussion. One of them is keeping the conversation horizontal
    It is often a struggle to decentralize the conversation away from what the teacher thinks. However, the top-down talk that teachers are expected to provide in many classrooms undermines the dialogic format we advocate here. Cruz and Thornton (2009)

    This online activity (Webinar 16.6) is the most wanted for teachers who dominate the cooperative learning as their teaching style because it talks about focusing on what students feel, so there will be plenty of differences, especially the students' opinion. At that time, both teachers and students should be open-minded to honor the differences.
    Firstly, I would like to say that it is so challenging for Indonesian teachers to attract the students to be as active as possible, but it does not matter if the teachers keep trying hard to attract their students.
    It is also very great that the goals are to promote the language learning, so it basically focuses on the language classes (it may be an additional language lesson such as English lesson).
    As we know, in learning language, students should be active. Besides, the class should be fun, too.

    But one thing I think that it may be a problem is to control the learning through discussion.
    Based on my experience, there may be some students who are engaged with the lesson while the others may not be engaged.
    Some students tend to participate in the learning discussion and others may be passively involved (they just follow the rules, but they may not want to work together).
    Absolutely, it depends on the students' characteristics, the teachers' learning style, the situation, and the environment.

    Overall, this webinar is nicely working a good job to attract teachers to use the cooperative learning strategy.
